Addressing Dual Diagnosis

With dual diagnosis, about one-third of all people experiencing mental illnesses and about half of people living with severe mental illnesses, experience substance abuse, with both having their own unique symptoms. Individuals suffering from a dual diagnosis often face a wide range of psychosocial issues and may experience multiple interacting illnesses.

An individual may encounter a variety of problems as a result of a dual diagnosis, and it takes time to determine what might cause either condition. Although substance abuse and mental disorders are closely associated, one may not necessarily influence the other.

Our friends at Column Health have put together an information graphic on treatment options for dual diagnosis patients- those who have mental illness as well as an addiction issue.
