Writer Reflects on 13 Years of Sobriety

Katy Dumpster, a Chicago Now writer with the blog called “I Got A Dumpster Family!”, wrote an inspiration piece about her sobriety as she reflected on the last 13 years. October 4, 2001 is Katy’s sobriety date, but she admits the continual struggle and rewards of recovery.

In long-term sobriety, Katy notes, the same struggles exist as those for the newly sober, but the days are marked with gratitude. They are filled with pride of accomplishment and positive contact with family. The most important thing is to understand that your sobriety is a choice that you make for yourself and the people around you.

Katy’s revelation that her decision to commit to recovery freed her family to have her back in their lives, as well as to have their own lives back, was particularly sobering (pun intended). She understands the value of support and of mending close relationships. Mostly, though, Katy keeps it light. She celebrates the joy of sobriety and is proud of her life choices.
